TotalEnergies (Paris:TTE) and Mozambique Announce Full Restart of Mozambique LNG Project

Afungi, Mozambique — January 29, 2026 — Leads & Copy — TotalEnergies and the Republic of Mozambique have announced the full restart of the Mozambique LNG project activities.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, met with His Excellency Daniel Chapo, President of Mozambique, in Afungi to make the announcement. This restart follows the Mozambique LNG consortium’s decision on November 7, 2025, to lift the Force Majeure, which had been declared in 2021.

The government of Mozambique has pledged its support for the project’s restart and will address the consequences of the Force Majeure period. This includes measures to ensure security and continued cooperation with Rwanda.

Construction has resumed both offshore and onshore at the Afungi site. Currently, over 4,000 workers are mobilized, with more than 3,000 being Mozambican nationals. The project is 40% complete, and the first LNG is expected in 2029.

The Mozambique LNG project is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to Mozambique, including an ambitious local content plan. It will create up to 7,000 direct jobs for Mozambicans during construction, and contracts awarded to Mozambican companies are anticipated to exceed USD 4 billion.

Mozambique LNG has also initiated a large-scale socio-economic development program to support local communities in the Cabo Delgado province. The Mozambique LNG Foundation, established in 2023 with a budget of USD 200 million, has already created over 8,000 jobs and supported 7,000 farmers and fishermen in the province.

Pouyanné expressed his gratitude to President Chapo and Mozambican authorities for their commitment to the project, stating, “The full restart of project activities marks a major milestone for Mozambique LNG and the country… We are now working together to make this project a great success for the people of Mozambique.” He added that the project will position Mozambique as a major LNG exporter and bring lasting economic benefits to the Mozambican people through strong local content.

President Chapo stated that the project’s resumption represents a significant milestone for the national economy, reaffirming international partners’ confidence in Mozambique’s energy, institutional, and human potential. He noted the project will have a direct and significant impact on job creation, stimulate the national labor market, and promote capacity-building of Mozambican manpower. Chapo added, “At the same time, it consolidates Mozambique’s positioning as a regional energy hub and reaffirms the country as a credible and relevant actor in the global Liquefied Natural Gas market, strengthening its geostrategic position and its role in global energy security.”
