TORONTO, October 23, 2025 — Leads & Copy — Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE) announced that Cascade Nuclear Partners, an equal joint venture comprised of Aecon, Kiewit, and Black & Veatch, is finalizing negotiations with Energy Northwest to collaboratively complete the design, planning and construction of the first four of 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMR) under a progressive design-build model.
Each Xe-100 SMR, developed by X-energy, is a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor that provides 80 megawatts of electricity. The first phase of the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility will generate up to 320 megawatts through four reactor modules near Richland, WA.
Aecon President and CEO Jean-Louis Servranckx said the project underscores Aecon’s strategic focus on nuclear opportunities in the U.S. and globally. Energy Northwest announced an agreement with Amazon in October 2024 for environmental, safety, permitting, licensing and risk analyses for the project, with construction expected to begin by the end of the decade and operations targeted for the 2030s.
Aecon Senior Vice President, Nuclear, Aaron Johnson, said Aecon is well positioned to harness its SMR construction experience to help meet future energy needs.
According to Aecon Group Inc. Vice President, U.S. Nuclear Operations, Brad Smalldridge, the team looks forward to safely carrying out the project with Energy Northwest and its partners.
Energy Northwest CEO Bob Schuetz said Cascade Nuclear Partners’ knowledge, approach, and alignment with Energy Northwest’s values gives them confidence in the project’s delivery.
Kiewit Nuclear Solutions Co. President Mike Rinehart said they’re excited to bring their engineering design, construction, and procurement expertise in safely delivering major energy projects across North America to this critical initiative.
Black & Veatch Power Providers President Todd Edsall said that the company is proud to bring its deep technical expertise and collaborative spirit to a project that will help shape the future of clean, reliable energy in Washington State.
